The National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) continues to support relief efforts after Hurricane Helene. Affected areas encompass Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Three complex incident management teams (CIMT) have been mobilized. One CIMT is assigned to the Big Bend region of Florida to assist with urban search and rescue and emergency road clearing. One is in Newton, North Carolina to help clear roads. and the third is in Cherokee, North Carolina to provide response support in the aftermath of the hurricane.
As of this morning, NICC has mobilized 189 personnel to Georgia and North Carolina through Federal Emergency Management Agency’sEmergency Support Function 4. These resources include two CIMTs, one all hazard incident management team, one Type 3 team, 15 saw modules, a lead dispatcher, and two interagency hotshot crews.
With fall upon us, wildland firefighters in several states continue to work toward containment goals on large fires. Right now, 27 large active wildfires are being managed with full suppression strategies nationwide. These wildfires have burned 1,048,269 acres. More than 10,200 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents, including 14 complex incident management teams, 174 crews, 521 engines, and 65 helicopters.
Weather
A dry cold front will move through the central Plains today, with breezy and dry northern winds gusting to 30 mph behind the front over northeast Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas. Breezy and dry southerly winds will develop ahead of the front across central and western Oklahoma and Texas, as well. Hot, well above normal temperatures to 110oF will continue across much of the lower elevations of California into the southern Great Basin and Southwest. Very low afternoon relative humidity below 15% and very poor overnight recovery for mid- slopes and ridges will continue. Warm and dry conditions will continue across the Inland Northwest into the northern Great Basin and northern Rockies, but winds will be lighter today. Drier conditions are expected across the Appalachians to the East Coast, with dry conditions continuing in the Great Lakes.
