Applications for employment at the Great Basin Area Incident Support Cache (GBK) for the 2024 fire season will be accepted soon. The application dates will be shared as soon as they are available. 

GBK is located at the National Interagency Fire Center, 3833 S. Development Ave, Boise, Idaho 83705.

Available Positions & Current Pay Rates for 2024:

Laborer: $22.16/hr
Driver/Operator: $24.36/hr
Driver/Class A CDL: $26.80/hr
Material Handler: $26.80/hr

Rate of pay is determined by position assigned per DOI Administratively Determined (AD) Pay Plan for Emergency Workers (Casuals). Overtime is not paid for work performed over 40 hours/week and is factored into the rate of pay as determined by the AD Pay Plan. Employees hired under the AD Pay Plan are not entitled to earn annual or sick leave, or to receive Federal Government life, health, or retirement benefits.

Emergency workers are hired only when incident support exceeds normal staff capacity. Length of employment or number of hours is not guaranteed.

Laborers may work over 10 hours daily and more than 40 hours a week. In most cases, set work hours are planned weekly, with advance notice.

Drivers are limited to 10 hours driving per day. Work schedules are likely to be unplanned, with a potential requirement for drivers to report on short notice. Overnight deliveries are not uncommon. Travel expenses are reimbursed.

Position Description/Work Environment/Physical Effort 

Laborer: Work involves the repair and rehabilitation of wildland fire supplies and equipment and/or performing general warehousing duties providing support to shipping and receiving operations. The work is performed inside or outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. The employee is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and other injuries inherent to work performed. The employee often stands on hard surfaces for extended periods of time and bends, stoops and works in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. The employee is required to lift and carry items that weigh up to 40 pounds (18 kilograms) on a recurring basis.

Driver/Operator: Work involves the distribution of wildland fire supplies and equipment. Employee operates a variety of vehicles to include 24’ enclosed box van up to 26,000# gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), flat-bed/stake-side trucks and ½ to 1 ton pickup trucks. Valid state driver’s license required. Driving involves all types of traffic and weather conditions, often over unimproved roads. Employee is exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and other injuries inherent to work performed. Work is primarily performing driving duties, although some work may be performed outdoors in mild to extreme weather conditions.

Driver/Class A CDL: Work involves the distribution of wildland fire supplies and equipment. Employee operates tractor trailer trucks with a GVWR of 26,001# or greater. Valid Class A CDL state driver’s license required. Driving involves all types of traffic and weather conditions, often over unimproved roads. Employee is exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and other injuries inherent to work performed. Work is primarily performing driving duties, although some work may be performed outdoors in mild to extreme weather conditions.
